Emergency Medical Services

Lexington County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has demonstrated substantial growth and evolution since its establishment in 1974. Originating with 16 personnel operating four ambulances on 24-hour shifts, the organization has expanded to meet the increasing demands of the community. Presently, Lexington County EMS employs 198 full and part-time staff, managing up to twenty ambulances through strategically designed 12-hour shifts. This enhanced capacity enables the service to respond to over 62,000 emergency calls annually.

The administrative and operational framework is structured to ensure efficient and effective service delivery. Leadership is provided by an EMS Chief, supported by two Deputy Chiefs and two Assistant Chiefs, who oversee daily operations.

Operationally, the Deputy Chief of Operations, two Watch Commanders, four Shift Commanders, and fourteen Lieutenants manage 153 frontline personnel, while administrative functions are handled by a Deputy Chief of Administration, Assistant Chief of CAPE, Assistant Chief of Logistics, two Planning Captains, Three Community paramedics, Billing Manager, Senior Administrative Assistant, Accreditation Manager, two Billing Clerks, two Logistics Coordinators, and two Logistics Officers.

Clinical operations are executed by highly trained Basic and Advanced Life Support providers, staffing the ambulance fleet. To optimize the utilization of paramedic clinicians, strategically deployed paramedic-staffed Quick Response Vehicles (QRVs) provide rapid intervention in critical situations. Deployment strategies, including staggered scheduling of ambulances and QRVs during peak hours, are implemented to ensure a timely response to emergencies.

Dispatching is managed through a sophisticated 911 computer-aided dispatch (CAD) center. This system leverages Automatic Vehicle Locator (AVL) technology and is staffed by Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) certified in Priority Dispatch Software. This advanced system facilitates efficient resource allocation, ensuring that the appropriate level of care is dispatched promptly to address the high volume of annual emergency responses, thereby upholding the organization's commitment to delivering exceptional pre-hospital medical services.

Notably, Lexington County EMS achieved Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) accreditation in Fall 2024, signifying a commitment to the highest standards of quality and service.
